The Albino Firecracker Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) is a colourful livebearing fish known for its bright red-orange colouration, pale albino body tones and the distinctive elongated lower tail fin seen in mature males. Active, hardy and eye-catching, they are a great choice for lively community aquariums with moderately hard, alkaline water.

  • Adult size: Approximately 8–12 cm, with males appearing longer due to the sword-like tail extension

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful and active, although males may chase females or compete with other males

  • Social behaviour: Social but not a true schooling fish. Best kept in groups, ideally with more females than males

  • Tank mates: Suitable with other peaceful community fish that enjoy similar water conditions, including mollies, platies, larger peaceful tetras, rainbowfish and some Corydoras

  • Avoid with: Very aggressive fish, persistent fin nippers and species requiring very soft, acidic water

  • Recommended temperature: 22–28°C

  • Recommended pH: Approximately 7.0–8.3

  • Water hardness: Moderately hard to hard water preferred

  • Minimum tank size: Around 100 L for a small group, with plenty of horizontal swimming space

  • Tank setup: Best kept in a well-filtered aquarium with plants, open swimming areas and a secure lid, as Swordtails are capable jumpers

  • Diet: Omnivorous; feed quality flakes or pellets with vegetable matter, spirulina and occasional frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia

  • Care level: Beginner to intermediate

  • Swimming level: Primarily mid to upper water

  • Breeding behaviour: Livebearer. Females give birth to free-swimming fry and can reproduce regularly when males and females are housed together

Albino Firecracker Swordtails are social fish rather than tight schooling fish. A ratio of around one male to two or three females is usually recommended to reduce stress from persistent male chasing. Multiple males may also compete with each other, so larger tanks with plenty of space and cover are preferred.
