The Assorted Molly (Poecilia spp.) selection includes a colourful mix of molly varieties, which may feature black, white, gold, orange, dalmatian and other patterned colour forms. Active, hardy and full of personality, mollies are a popular choice for peaceful community aquariums with moderately hard, alkaline water.

  • Adult size: Approximately 6–10 cm depending on variety and sex

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful and active

  • Social behaviour: Social but not a true schooling fish. Best kept in small groups, ideally with more females than males to reduce persistent chasing

  • Tank mates: Suitable with other peaceful fish that enjoy similar harder, alkaline water conditions, including platies, swordtails, larger peaceful tetras and some Corydoras

  • Avoid with: Very aggressive fish, fin nippers and species that require very soft, acidic water

  • Recommended temperature: 24–28°C

  • Recommended pH: Approximately 7.0–8.5

  • Water hardness: Moderately hard to hard water preferred

  • Minimum tank size: Around 75 L for a small group, with larger tanks recommended for bigger varieties or mixed groups

  • Tank setup: Best kept in a well-filtered aquarium with plants, open swimming space and stable water quality. Mollies appreciate mineral-rich water and good oxygenation

  • Diet: Omnivorous with a strong herbivorous tendency; feed quality flakes or pellets with vegetable-based foods, spirulina and occasional frozen or live foods

  • Care level: Beginner to intermediate

  • Swimming level: Primarily mid to upper water

  • Breeding behaviour: Livebearer. Females give birth to free-swimming fry and can produce young frequently when males and females are kept together

Assorted Mollies are social fish but do not need to school tightly together. A group setup works best, and keeping roughly one male to two or three females can help reduce stress caused by constant male attention.
