The Costae Tetra (Moenkhausia costae), also known as the Blackline Tetra, is a hardy and highly active South American schooling fish recognised by its silvery body and distinctive dark markings around the tail. Their energetic swimming behaviour makes them an excellent choice for larger planted community aquariums with plenty of open swimming space.

  • Adult size: Approximately 5–7 cm

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful, but very active and may occasionally nip slower or long-finned fish

  • Social behaviour: Schooling/shoaling species and should be kept in groups of at least 8–10, with larger groups preferred

  • Tank mates: Best with other active, peaceful community fish such as tetras, rainbowfish, Corydoras and similarly sized peaceful species. Avoid very slow-moving, timid or long-finned fish

  • Recommended temperature: 24–28°C

  • Recommended pH: 6.0–7.5

  • Water hardness: Soft to moderately hard

  • Minimum tank size: Around 75–100 L, with plenty of horizontal swimming space

  • Tank setup: Best kept in a planted, well-filtered aquarium with open mid-water swimming areas. A secure lid is recommended as they can be strong jumpers

  • Diet: Omnivorous; readily accepts quality flakes and pellets along with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworms

  • Care level: Beginner to intermediate

Costae Tetras are true social schooling fish and should not be kept individually. A larger group helps them feel secure, spreads out any chasing or fin-nipping behaviour and creates a much more impressive natural display.
