Fahaka Puffer (Tetraodon lineatus)

The Fahaka Puffer, also known as the Nile Puffer, is a striking and intelligent freshwater species admired for its bold yellow and cream colouring, dark striped markings and distinctive personality. Known for its curious behaviour and impressive appearance, it is a popular choice among experienced puffer enthusiasts.

Fahaka Puffers are highly interactive fish that often recognise their owners and show curiosity towards their surroundings. However, they are territorial predators and are best kept in a species-only aquarium.

  • Provide a soft sand substrate and sturdy decorations.

  • Include caves and hiding areas while leaving plenty of open swimming space.

  • Maintain excellent filtration, as Fahaka Puffers produce considerable waste.

  • Use a secure, tight-fitting aquarium lid.

  • Best kept individually due to their highly territorial and aggressive nature.

  • Avoid housing with other fish, as they may attack, injure or consume tankmates.

Feeding

Fahaka Puffers are carnivorous and require a varied diet containing hard-shelled foods to help maintain healthy teeth. Suitable foods include snails, mussels, clams, prawns, crayfish and other appropriately sized shellfish.

Offer a varied diet and monitor their teeth regularly, as pufferfish teeth grow continuously and may require management if they become overgrown.

Important: Fahaka Puffers are not suitable for typical community aquariums. They grow large, require excellent water quality and need a carefully managed diet. They are best suited to experienced aquarists who can provide a dedicated aquarium.
