The Furcata Rainbowfish (Pseudomugil furcatus), also known as the Forktail Blue-Eye, is a lively and colourful schooling fish recognised by its bright blue eyes, yellow fins and distinctive forked tail. Peaceful but very active, they look their best when kept in a good-sized group in a planted aquarium with plenty of open swimming space.
Adult size: Approximately 5–6 cm
Temperament: Peaceful and active
Social behaviour: Schooling/shoaling species and should be kept in groups of at least 6, with larger groups preferred
Tank mates: Suitable with other peaceful community fish of a similar size, including small rainbowfish, rasboras, peaceful tetras and Corydoras
Recommended temperature: 24–28°C
Recommended pH: 7.0–8.0
Minimum tank size: Around 60 L, with plenty of horizontal swimming space
Tank setup: Best in a mature, planted and well-oxygenated aquarium with some water movement and a secure lid, as they can jump
Diet: Omnivorous; feed a varied diet of quality flakes or small pellets alongside frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia
Care level: Intermediate
Furcata Rainbowfish are social fish and should not be kept alone. Larger groups encourage more natural behaviour, help them feel secure and allow males to display their impressive colours and fins.
