Geophagus sveni Cichlid

The Geophagus sveni is a beautiful South American eartheater cichlid, admired for its elegant body shape, shimmering scales and colourful markings. As it matures, its metallic blue-green highlights and warm red-orange accents become increasingly prominent, making it a standout addition to larger freshwater aquariums.

Known as an eartheater, this species naturally sifts through sandy substrate in search of small food particles and microorganisms. Its peaceful nature and fascinating feeding behaviour make it a popular choice among cichlid enthusiasts.

Geophagus sveni naturally sift through sand to find food. Offer a varied diet of quality sinking cichlid pellets, granules and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms and mysis shrimp. Feed appropriately sized portions to ensure they receive adequate nutrition.

Aquarium Requirements

A spacious aquarium with fine sand is essential, allowing Geophagus sveni to display their natural sifting behaviour without damaging their mouths or gills. Provide driftwood, rocks and open swimming areas, while maintaining excellent filtration and regular water changes.

They are generally peaceful for cichlids and can be kept with compatible South American species of similar size and temperament. They may become territorial during breeding, so provide enough space and suitable hiding areas. Keeping them in a small group is recommended where aquarium size allows.
