The German Balloon Ram is a selectively bred form of the German Blue Ram, known for its compact rounded body, vivid blue markings, warm yellow-gold tones and red accents. Despite their smaller, stockier shape, they retain the curious personality and striking colour of standard rams and make an attractive feature fish in warm, peaceful community aquariums.

  • Adult size: Approximately 4–6 cm

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful, but can become territorial when breeding

  • Social behaviour: Not a schooling fish. Best kept singly, as a bonded pair, or in a carefully planned group with enough space and territories

  • Tank mates: Suitable with peaceful tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, pencilfish and other calm community species

  • Avoid with: Aggressive cichlids, fin nippers and very boisterous fish that may stress or outcompete them

  • Recommended temperature: 27–30°C

  • Recommended pH: Approximately 5.5–7.5

  • Water hardness: Soft to moderately hard

  • Minimum tank size: Around 60 L for a pair, with larger tanks preferred for community setups

  • Tank setup: Best kept in a mature, well-filtered aquarium with soft substrate, plants, driftwood, caves and shaded areas. Stable water quality is especially important

  • Diet: Omnivorous; feed quality small pellets or flakes alongside frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworms

  • Care level: Intermediate

  • Swimming level: Primarily lower to mid-water

  • Breeding behaviour: Pair-forming egg layer. Breeding pairs may become territorial and defend a chosen spawning site

  • Special note: The balloon body shape is a selectively bred trait, so good water quality, appropriate diet and avoiding overcrowding are particularly important

German Balloon Rams are territorial dwarf cichlids rather than schooling fish. They can live peacefully with suitable community fish, but pairs may defend a small area of the aquarium, especially when spawning.
