The Green Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon simulans) is a small, peaceful schooling tetra known for its brilliant blue-green iridescent stripe and subtle red markings. More delicate and slightly smaller than the common Neon Tetra, they look especially striking in planted or blackwater-style aquariums where their colouration can really stand out.

  • Adult size: Approximately 2–3 cm

  • Temperament: Peaceful and social

  • Social behaviour: Schooling species and should be kept in groups of at least 8–10, with larger groups preferred

  • Tank mates: Best with other small, peaceful fish such as small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, pygmy Corydoras and Otocinclus

  • Avoid with: Large, aggressive or boisterous fish that may intimidate or eat them

  • Recommended temperature: 24–28°C

  • Recommended pH: Approximately 4.0–7.0

  • Water hardness: Soft water preferred

  • Minimum tank size: Around 40 L, with larger tanks preferred for bigger schools

  • Tank setup: Best kept in a mature, well-filtered aquarium with plants, driftwood, shaded areas and gentle water movement. Dark substrate and tannins can help enhance their colouration

  • Diet: Omnivorous; feed fine flakes, micro pellets and small frozen or live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia and cyclops

  • Care level: Intermediate

Green Neon Tetras are strongly social and should not be kept alone or in very small groups. A larger school helps them feel secure, encourages natural swimming behaviour and creates a much more impressive display.
