The Orange Oranda Goldfish (Carassius auratus) is a beautiful fancy goldfish variety recognised by its rounded body, flowing fins, bright orange colouration and distinctive fleshy head growth known as a wen. Peaceful and personable, Orandas make impressive feature fish in spacious, well-filtered aquariums.
Adult size: Approximately 15–20 cm, with some individuals growing larger in excellent conditions
Temperament: Peaceful and social
Social behaviour: Social but not a true schooling fish. They do well with other compatible fancy goldfish and often interact closely with tank mates
Tank mates: Best kept with other slow-swimming fancy goldfish such as Ryukins, Fantails, Ranchu and other Orandas
Avoid with: Fast single-tail goldfish such as Comets and Shubunkins, aggressive fish and known fin-nippers that may outcompete or harass them
Recommended temperature: 18–24°C
Recommended pH: Approximately 7.0–8.0
Water hardness: Moderately soft to hard water, provided conditions remain stable
Minimum tank size: Around 75–100 L for one adult, with significantly more space recommended for additional goldfish
Tank setup: Requires strong filtration, excellent oxygenation and plenty of open swimming space. Smooth decorations are preferred to help protect their delicate fins and head growth
Diet: Omnivorous; feed quality sinking goldfish pellets alongside vegetables such as peas and leafy greens, with occasional frozen foods such as brine shrimp or bloodworms
Care level: Beginner to intermediate
Swimming level: Uses all areas of the aquarium but is generally slower moving than single-tail goldfish
Special note: The wen may continue developing as the fish matures and should be monitored to ensure it does not interfere with the eyes or gill covers
Orange Orandas are social fish but do not need to school. They are happiest with other similarly shaped fancy goldfish that swim and feed at a similar pace, helping prevent competition for food.
Live fish are sold subject to availability and may vary slightly in size, orange intensity, fin shape and wen development. Please review our livestock shipping and DOA guarantee before ordering.
