The Otocinclus, commonly known as the Oto Catfish or Dwarf Sucker Catfish, is a small, peaceful freshwater fish loved for its gentle nature and ability to graze on algae. With its streamlined body, subtle markings and constant grazing behaviour, it is an excellent addition to planted aquariums.
Otocinclus are social fish that spend much of their time moving across plant leaves, glass and hardscape in search of natural algae and biofilm.
Scientific Name: Otocinclus spp.
Common Name: Otocinclus / Oto Catfish
Origin: South America
Adult Size: Approximately 3–5cm
Temperament: Very peaceful
Care Level: Moderate
Diet: Herbivore / Aufwuchs grazer
Swimming Level: Bottom to Middle
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Keep in a group of at least 6, preferably more.
Best suited to mature, well-established aquariums with naturally growing algae and biofilm.
Provide plenty of live plants, driftwood and smooth surfaces for grazing.
Maintain excellent water quality and good oxygenation.
Use gentle to moderate water flow.
Suitable for peaceful community aquariums with small, non-aggressive tankmates.
Avoid introducing them to newly established tanks with insufficient natural food.
Otocinclus primarily graze on soft algae and biofilm. Supplement their diet with algae wafers, spirulina-based foods and blanched vegetables such as zucchini and cucumber.
Ensure there is enough food available for every fish, as Otocinclus can struggle to compete with larger, more active tankmates.
Important: Otocinclus are sensitive to poor water quality and sudden changes in water conditions. They should only be introduced to established aquariums with a reliable food supply. They are not a substitute for regular aquarium maintenance.
