Pakistani Loach (Botia almorhae)

Eye-Catching Patterns and Active Bottom-Dwelling Behaviour!

Add personality to your aquarium with the Pakistani Loach, also known as the Yo-Yo Loach. This active freshwater fish is famous for its distinctive dark, chain-like markings against a pale silver body, which can resemble the letters Y and O. An inquisitive bottom-dweller, it spends its time exploring the aquarium, searching for food and investigating hiding places.

  • Distinctive Patterning: Features bold, dark markings across a silvery body that develop into unique patterns as the fish matures.

  • Active & Curious: Enjoys exploring caves, driftwood and spaces between aquarium decorations.

  • Social Species: Best kept in groups of at least 5–6 to encourage natural behaviour and help distribute social interactions.

  • Adult Size: Can grow to approximately 12–15cm, sometimes larger.

  • Water Temperature: 24–28°C.

  • pH Range: Approximately 6.0–7.5.

  • Omnivorous Diet: Accepts sinking pellets, quality wafers, frozen foods and other suitable protein-rich foods.

  • Snail Control: May eat small nuisance snails as part of its varied diet.

Care Requirements:

  • Provide a spacious aquarium of at least 200 litres for a group, with more space as they grow.

  • Include caves, smooth rocks and driftwood for shelter and exploration.

  • Use a soft substrate where possible to protect their sensitive barbels.

  • Maintain excellent filtration and stable water quality.

  • Avoid housing with very small fish or slow-moving species that may be stressed by their activity.

Suitable For: Spacious freshwater community aquariums with active, compatible tank mates.

Difficulty: Intermediate. Pakistani Loaches are social, energetic fish that require suitable group sizes and plenty of space.
