The Pinoy Angelfish is a striking selectively bred variety of freshwater angelfish known for its deep blue-black colouration, metallic sheen and elegant triangular body shape. With long flowing fins and a bold presence, Pinoy Angelfish make an impressive centrepiece fish in tall, well-maintained community aquariums.

  • Adult size: Body approximately 10–15 cm long, with a total height of up to 20–25 cm including fins

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; generally peaceful when young but can become territorial as they mature or pair off

  • Social behaviour: Not a schooling fish. Juveniles may be kept in groups, but adults often form pairs and establish territories

  • Tank mates: Best with peaceful to moderately robust fish that are not small enough to be eaten. Suitable options can include larger tetras, rainbowfish, Corydoras and peaceful catfish

  • Avoid with: Very small fish, fin-nipping species, highly aggressive cichlids and slow fish likely to be bullied

  • Recommended temperature: 24–28°C

  • Recommended pH: Approximately 6.0–7.5

  • Water hardness: Soft to moderately hard

  • Minimum tank size: Around 100–120 L for a pair, with larger and taller aquariums strongly recommended

  • Tank setup: Best kept in a tall, well-filtered aquarium with plants, driftwood and open swimming space. Broad-leaved plants can also provide natural spawning sites

  • Diet: Omnivorous; feed quality flakes or pellets alongside frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms and daphnia

  • Care level: Intermediate

  • Breeding behaviour: Pair-forming egg layer. Breeding pairs become territorial and may aggressively defend their chosen spawning site and fry

Pinoy Angelfish are not true schooling fish. Young fish can live together successfully, but as they mature they may form pairs and become territorial. Providing plenty of space, visual barriers and hiding areas helps reduce aggression in group setups.
